Hilary Davidson, EVIL IN ALL ITS DISGUISES (2013)

Genre: Thriller

Series: Lily Moore Series (THE DAMAGE DONE, THE NEXT ONE TO FALL)

First Sentence: "The snake had coiled itself halfway around my ankle by the time I spotted it."

If you want to step into the heels of starlet rubbing shoulders with Hollywood's elite while listening to the waves crashing against the beaches of Acapulco—especially if you, yourself, are on the beach—EVIL IN ALL ITS DISGUISES is the perfect summer read for you. Which is why I'm posting this review in June, rather than in March when the book was first released.

Davidson's settings and characters somehow evoke the glamour of Hollywood's golden age without leaving the decade. Her latest, EVIL IN ALL ITS DISGUISES (which may be her best Lily Moore novel so far), is set in the resort town of Acapulco, where Lily joins a group of travel writers on an all-expenses-paid trip at the Hotel Cerón. However, instead of finding a hotel befitting what was once the playground of the stars, she finds a ghost-town, with neglect and crime at every turn. Lily's friend and fellow travel journalist, Skye, disappears from the hotel just after telling Lily about her investigation into a former lover's company's criminal dealings.  After running into dead-ends in the form of the hotel staff and local authorities, Lily, of course, takes it upon herself to investigate, and runs headlong into danger. Unfortunately, when she tries to leave, she can't. Which, unlike the globe-trotting adventures of her prior two novels, turns EVIL IN ALL ITS DISGUISES into a quasi-locked-room mystery. But the tight location and small cast of characters gives this book a sense of edge-of-the-seat tension that exceeds even the other books in the series.  Not only that, but part of Hilary's talent lies in creating characters with so many layers—villains with underlying moral codes, protagonists with heaps of emotional damage—but who don't sit and dwell, they get up and do something about it. And this is showcased at its best in EVIL IN ALL ITS DISGUISES.

With every book, Hilary breaks the mold. I can't wait to see where she goes next.

Hilary has graciously donated a copy of EVIL IN ALL ITS DISGUISES to be given away.
